On January 11, 2026, we held our second winter training session at The Turf. He is a recap of the drills, lessons, and skills worked on.
Group Lesson: Cut Offs and Communication
We started on the “big field” at The Turf, so we worked on drills related to cut-offs.
The first drill involved working on proper positioning for the cutoff man when taking a throw from the outfield (arms up, ready to receive throw) as well as turning the correct way (glove side) to throw the ball to the infield. A net was set up on one end and coaches threw the balls to the players, who had to turn properly and make an accurate throw into the net.
Example:
The second cutoff drill emphasized communciation between the infielder covering second base and the cutoff man. We focused on trying to have the cutoff man be in a straight line, which requires the infielder to verbally direct him (“left,” “right” and “stop”) and then yelling for the “cut.”
The third drill on the big field was a middle infield drill with the second baseman and shortstop. The coaches hit balls to the players at various speeds and locations, requiring the players to independently assess whether to flip the ball to second base or make an overhand throw.
Example:
We then did infield practice with players at all four infield positions, fielding ground balls in various situations.
Stations
We then moved to the smaller field and divided into stations.
Station 1: Soft Toss
The goal is to get consistent swing mechanics while working on hand-eye coordination. Coaches gave tips and comments as the players took turns.
Station 2: Tee Work – Two Tee Drill
For the tee work this week, we did a two-tee drill. In this drill, the tees are set on the inside and outside portion of home plate. As the player begins to load, the coach would instruct: “inside” or “outside.” If “inside,” the player swung at the closer tee, pulling the ball. If “outside,” the player swung at the further away tee, driving the ball to the opposite field.
Example:
Station 3: Regular Batting Practice
Using one of the lanes, coaches pitched to the players from a regular distance. Players were instructed on proper form and swing path. Additionally, players were really encouraged to focus on proper loading (the idea of going back to go forward) to help generate bat speed.
AWARDS:
The MVP of this session was Graham for his consistent high level of performance throughout the day. The recipient of the Heart and Hustle Award was Noah for his enthusiastic approach to each drill and helping to encourage his teammates.
